Anaerobic Biofilm Systems for Biogas Production

In this study two laboratory-scale anaerobic biofilm reactors were run in parallel, one with fixed and one with moving biofilm carriers. The purpose of our work was to compare the biogas production and the COD removal efficiency of the two systems.

In the fixed film reactor the biofilm carriers were polyester tubes, while in the moving bed system PVA-gel beads were used for attachment of microorganisms.

The results showed that in the fixed film system the COD removal rate was much higher (70-80%) than in the moving bed system (50-60%). The biogas production rate in the fixed film reactor was stable (1,2-2 Lgas/Lsludge) while the HRT was kept at 28-30 days, but reducing it gas production decreased to 0,5 Lgas/Lsludge. In the moving bed biofilm system the biogas production did not depend on HRT. During the experiment it varied between 0,2-0,5 Lgas/Lsludge.
