Doctoral School of
Chemistry and Environmental Sciences
For PhD Students
Our Training Plan outlines the steps required to fulfil the academic and research obligations of doctoral studies, including the preparation of an individual work plan, monitoring academic progress, the successful completion of the Complex exam, and the acquisition of the absolutorium.
In addition, it covers the key procedural milestones related to obtaining the PhD degree, such as conducting the pre-defence of the doctoral dissertation, submitting the dissertation, and participating in its public defence.

Publications
In the KKDI Training Plan, does the term “peer-reviewed journal” mean that the student must publish in a minimum Q1-ranked journal?
The journal may have a lower ranking; however, its impact factor must be acceptable (in any case higher than 1).
Annual Report, Absolutorium
I am a final-year PhD student, and my student status expires in August. I will request the absolutorium then. Do I still need to submit an annual report?
The final report is the closing report, the credits of which (20) must be recorded in the Neptun academic system before requesting the absolutorium.
Before the comprehensive examination, do I need to submit an evaluation form this semester, or is it sufficient if the courses and the 20 credits for the report are recorded in Neptun?
No submission is required, as there may still be courses to complete after the comprehensive examination during the examination period. The key point is that the credits required for the comprehensive examination (including the report) must be recorded in Neptun in time – before the comprehensive examination.
Comprehensive Examination
When should the comprehensive examination take place?
It is recommended to schedule the comprehensive examination for May–June (or early January for cross-semester students), so that if unsuccessful, there is an opportunity to organize a retake examination. The date is arranged by the supervisor and the research unit. Based on this, an official invitation signed by the Dean is issued by the Dean’s Office.
How do I apply for the comprehensive examination?
Electronically via Neptun and in paper form to the Secretary of the Doctoral School or the Faculty Doctoral Administrator during the study period. At the same time, the proposed examination committee must be submitted, which is compiled by the supervisor. The application must include the individual research topic (the future dissertation title) and, if applicable, the contact details of the co-supervisor (e.g. email address).
Who should act as the recording secretary?
The recording secretary is appointed by the candidate. This person may be a colleague, a PhD student, or in the case of external research, an external colleague. Their details (name, academic degree, position, workplace, contact information) must be indicated in the committee proposal.
Can the recording secretary also be a member of the examination committee?
No, a committee member cannot simultaneously act as the recording secretary.
Is the research report dependent on the comprehensive examination?
The research report does not have to precede the comprehensive examination; they are not time-dependent on each other. However, both must take place before the end of the semester.
Degree Procedure
What are the steps required to initiate the internal defence?
The internal defence (workshop debate, pre-defence) is always organized by the supervisor and the relevant research centre. The internal defence is public, and the reviewers must be invited. Minutes must be prepared, including an attendance sheet.
What conditions must be met when selecting reviewers for the defence (what are the exclusion criteria)?
(3) [DR 17 §] A person may not participate in the doctoral procedure as an official reviewer or committee member if a) they are a close relative of the candidate, or b) impartial judgment cannot reasonably be expected from them.
What are the requirements for establishing the examination committee?
DSZ 8/A § (22): At least one third of the committee members must not be in an employment relationship with the University. The chair of the committee may be a full professor, a habilitated associate professor, a habilitated college professor, a Professor Emeritus, or a holder of the title Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. All committee members must hold an academic degree. The supervisor, consultant, and persons who have co-published with the candidate in the doctoral topic may not serve as committee members.
Must co-authors of publications related to my dissertation sign a declaration, and by when must it be submitted?
All co-authors (including foreign co-authors) must sign a co-author declaration stating that they consent to the publication being listed in your dissertation and that they will not include the same publication in their own dissertation publication list (in the case of participants in doctoral training or degree procedures). If this occurs, it qualifies as plagiarism. The required declaration templates for doctoral participants and general co-authors are attached.
The dissertation and the required accompanying documents must be submitted to the Faculty Doctoral Administrator (Faculty of Engineering, Dean’s Office, Education Group). It is recommended to arrange an appointment in advance. The list of required dissertation attachments can be downloaded from the Doctoral School’s website: LINK
Must the dissertation title be identical to the approved research topic title?
The dissertation title may not differ from the approved topic title. A change of topic must be formally requested. In case of a topic change, it must also be verified in Neptun that the new title has been updated.
